I Feel That I’m Missing The Point
“In my whole life, I have known no wise people who didn’t read all the time,” says Charlie Munger. “None. Zero.”
NOTE: I wrote this blog in a story format so if you just want the highlights you can skip to the end.
I started developing reading habits 1 year back and since then I am trying to read as many books as possible trying to absorb all. But now I feel that I’m missing the point. π
*Ping*
1 year ago snap pops on my mobile screen. π²
In The Photo – reading my first book “4-hour Workweek” by Tim Ferris.
Felt so nostalgic and happy at the same time then suddenly I focused on the pages in the photo about “Mini retirements” I can’t remember that I even read that page or not. At that time my mind thought that what’s the point of reading so many books if I can’t recall everything.
That time I took a moment and reflect and I feel that I’m missing the point. It’s not about how many books you read per week or year it’s about how much you retain from them apply it to your own life (“Quality over Quantity”).
So I opened Notion and checked my reading list and saw that I have 5 books in the “In process” section.
So I made a few commitments to myself –
1- I will not buy any more books until and unless I finish all
the remaining and new books and re-read all the previously read books. π
2- I will read books patiently without any hurry and make notes via active recall so that I can take advantage of that book as best as I can.
3- I will quit the book I’m not enjoying without guilt. As James Osborne, Bason Asset Management said “I am quick to quit a book I’m not enjoying. I used to feel tremendous guilt about this, until I realized that great books were being written at a rate faster than I could consume them, and I have no time to waste on bad or uninteresting books.”
HOW IT WILL BENEFIT ME?
1- Carl Richards, Behavior Gap:
“I have a crazy thought for you. There is a time to stop reading. I feel like I am entering one of those seasons. It is a season for creation. I *think *reading all the time might be a bit overrated. We all run around singing its praises, because Warren, and Bill, and Barack do it…We make lists, we compete on how many books we read (I read 52 a year…oh I read 52 a week). I know this sounds CRAZY, but all this reading can dampen the ability to listen to a deeper wisdom that comes from being quiet and not consuming anything. Reading might be like lifting heavyweights in the gym. The lifting doesn’t make you stronger. The lifting actually tears the muscles apart. It is the rest and recovery AFTER the lifting that makes you stronger. So lift. But then stop and recover.”

2- “No man ever steps in the same river twice…” – Heraclitus
Although it’s the same book, I have changed, the world has changed, and by re-reading the book I will absorb new information that is not relevant to me back then but is now. The goal is to TURN WORDS INTO WORK. I learned about this concept in one of Ryan Holiday’s videos Click here to watch.
